Each year, worldwide deforestation claims a Pennsylvania-sized chunk of land. Those disappearing forests take with them habitat for wildlife and the only economic recourse that many of the world’s communities have.
The Rainforest Alliance’s global efforts are dedicated to reversing that trend. Our work currently protects over 100 million acres of forest including the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala. In Indonesia we’re working with local communities to protect rainforest habitat for critically endangered animals like orangutans and the Sumatran tiger.
Deforestation and forest degradation account for 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. We’re playing a huge role—both in the field and on the policy level—in fighting climate change and building a healthier planet for future generations.
