The western lowland gorilla—the smallest gorilla subspecies—is now critically endangered due to logging, poaching and devastating Ebola outbreaks. However, a recent study found healthy populations of western lowland gorillas on FSC certified logging concessions that work with the Rainforest Alliance in the Congo Basin, giving a new urgency to our work to protect the region’s forests.
