Mohammad Rafiq, senior vice president of programs at the Rainforest Alliance, develops, coordinates and oversees the organization's global work in agriculture, forestry, tourism, climate change and evaluation and research. Based in London, Rafiq has an educational background in forestry and agriculture with training in rural development, environmental impact assessment and organizational management. He specializes in social forestry with expertise in forest management planning and implementation.

Rafiq began as a professional forester with the Forests, Fisheries and Wildlife Department of the Government of North West Frontier Province Pakistan (NWFP), where he worked for 15 years and carried out diverse forestry assignments. In recognition of his pioneering social forestry work, the Government of NWFP granted him a special award.

In 1994, Rafiq joined the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the deputy director of its Sarhad Provincial Conservation Strategy Support Project, earning successive promotions and eventually becoming the IUCN Pakistan Country Representative in 2000. In March 2003, he was appointed senior advisor of special assignments for the IUCN's Global Programme, where he oversaw the transition of IUCN West Asia, Central Asia and North Africa to new leadership and location. He also managed the organization's biodiversity dialogue with the mining industry, leading to his eventual appointment as the head of its Business and Biodiversity Program which he developed and managed until he joined the Rainforest Alliance in 2008.

Rafiq has authored several papers and publications on the issues of natural resource management, environment and governance.
